TPU vs TPE: which should you choose?
TPU and TPE are flexible, rubber-like filaments. TPU is actually a type of TPE, but firmer and easier to print; pure TPE is softer and more elastic, but trickier. Below is the difference.
| Property | TPU | TPE |
|---|---|---|
| Flexibility | Flexible but firm | Softer, more elastic |
| Printability | Reasonably printable (slow) | Trickier, needs experience |
| Wear resistance | Very good | Good |
| Availability | Wide, many hardnesses | More limited |
| Typical use | Flexible clips, dampers, covers | Very soft, stretchy parts |
When TPU
Choose TPU for most flexible applications: shock dampers, flexible clips, protective covers. It's the best-printing flexible material.
When TPE
Choose (pure) TPE only when you genuinely need a softer, stretchier result than TPU offers — allow for more printing difficulty.
Our take
For almost all flexible parts, TPU is the practical choice; TPE only for extra softness.
