Reverse engineering
Definition
Reverse engineering is turning an existing object back into an editable digital model. Usually the part is first scanned and then cleanly redrawn in CAD.
That lets you reproduce, improve or adapt it. It's the way to make a part even without an original drawing — and to reinforce it right where the original was weak.
