PLA vs ABS: which should you choose?
PLA and ABS sit at the two extremes: PLA is the easiest and cleanest to print, ABS the strongest and most heat-resistant but the hardest. Below, when to choose which.
| Property | PLA | ABS |
|---|---|---|
| Printability | Very easy | Hard: warping, enclosure |
| Strength | Stiff but brittle | Strong and tougher |
| Heat resistance | Low (±60 °C) | High (±100 °C) |
| Fumes | Hardly any | Stronger fumes, ventilation needed |
| Finish | Crisp detail | Less sharp, but post-processable |
| Typical use | Decoration, prototypes | Functional, heat-exposed parts |
When PLA
Choose PLA for anything that mainly needs to look good and stay dimensionally accurate and indoors: models, prototypes, decoration.
When ABS
Choose ABS when the part truly needs to be strong and heat-resistant and you plan post-processing. PETG is often an easier middle ground, by the way.
Our take
PLA for form and ease, ABS for heat and strength. In between? PETG is usually the smartest choice.
