PLA vs PETG: which should you choose?
PLA and PETG are the two most-used filaments for 3D printing. PLA is the easiest to print and ideal for decorative pieces; PETG is tougher and more heat-resistant for parts that need to take some stress. Below you'll see where they differ and when to choose which.
| Property | PLA | PETG |
|---|---|---|
| Printability | Very easy, few settings | A bit trickier, can string |
| Strength | Stiff but brittle | Tougher, less likely to snap |
| Heat resistance | Low (±60 °C) | Higher (±70-80 °C) |
| Outdoor / moisture | Less suitable | Better against moisture and chemicals |
| Finish | Crisp, sharp detail | Slightly less sharp detail |
| Typical use | Decoration, models, prototypes | Functional parts, holders, outdoors |
When PLA
Choose PLA for decorative pieces, models, prototypes and anything that stays indoors and doesn't have to take heat or force. It prints the easiest and gives the sharpest detail.
When PETG
Choose PETG for functional parts that need to resist stress, some heat or moisture — holders, clips, enclosures, parts used outdoors.
Our take
Rule of thumb: PLA for form, PETG for function. Unsure for your use? Describe your part when you enquire and we'll help choose the material.
